DR. BEGUM MAITRA

Grasping the nettle: The problem with culture
Dr.
Begum Maitra will use material from popular culture, ethnography and her
clinical practice with individuals and families in multicultural
London
to explain
why 'culture' remains a central preoccupation for her. She hopes to engage
participants in a discussion as to whether psychotherapy can continue
its claims, however cautiously these might be framed, to be based on 'universal'
human truths. What, if any, effects do globalisation and Western
postmodern constructions of the individual, have on the discipline, its
core beliefs and training methods?
Dr.
Begum Maitra
is
Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the
East
London
and the City Mental Health Trust, and a Jungian analyst in private practice. She
is co-editor (with Dr Sami Timimi) of Critical Voices in Child and Adolescent
Mental Health (Free Association Books, 2006) and is involved in a study of
culture and parenting practice among South Asian families with
Surrey
University
.
This meeting is open to
practicing analysts and trainees.
