Leading Edges: Analytical Psychology

A Series of Talks initiated by Dr. Gottfried M. Heuer and Amanda Hon

Viral invasion, infection anxiety, the reappearance of horrifying illness and death in the contemporary world – HIV/AIDS has been an intensely charged world crisis for more than thirty-five years. The unapproachable intensity of early death tied to physical passions: this is the archetypal narrative of the experience of HIV/AIDS as it exists in the ego, in the imagination, in the body, and in politics. The passionate body is a generating focus – the body that desires, that is erotic – which is also the body that wants to live, that fights or welcomes contagion, rot, and disintegration.

Paul Attinello trained at the C. G. Jung-Institut in Zürich and is in private practice in Newcastle upon Tyne. He is a senior lecturer at Newcastle University and has taught at the University of Hong Kong and as a guest professor at UCLA, where he received his PhD. He is published in numerous journals, essay collections and reference works and has written extensively on contemporary musics, gender and sexuality, the culture of AIDS, and philosophical and psychological topics. He has lived with HIV for more than thirty-five years, had medical care on four continents, and run an HIV patient group for seventeen years.
