Members of the Association of Jungian Analysts may apply to become training analysts three years after qualifying, and if the application is successful, you may see candidates for analysis. You are asked to show your maturation as an analyst and demonstrate that you can hold and contain the complex dynamics arising in work with candidates.
Applications are considered bearing in mind each person’s unique background, professional capacities and experience. Please expand in detail on the following themes in your application showing that you have:
- an in-depth clinical practice with a wide range of patients, analysing at different frequencies of sessions per week (one and two sessions are low frequency, three and more sessions per week are high frequency), both long and short term;
- individual analytic supervision extending over the time of your membership;
- evidence of continuing professional development which can include teaching activities, publications, presentations, research, supervision, cultural involvement, and work within and for the analytic community;
- a vision of how you understand the role of being a training analyst;
- good standing with the Ethics and Professional Committee;
- and that your AJA fees are paid.
To determine eligibility please apply to the Chair of the Ethics and Professional Committee and describe your analytic practice as outlined above. Please ask your supervisor to write a short report, a copy of which they give you for inclusion with your application.
Please also include copies of your CPD returns relating to the past three years.
The Ethics and Professional Committee will ask a training analyst to meet you to discuss your development, and write a report, a copy of which will also be sent to you at the end of the process. You will pay an interview fee directly to the training analyst for this meeting. The fee is reviewed annually, and you will need to confirm the current rate with the Chair of the Ethics and Professional Committee. We will send a copy of your application, supervisor’s report and the CPD returns to your interviewer.
The committee considers your application, your supervisor’s reference, and the interview report. If the committee supports the application, we will recommend the AJA Council recognise you as a training analyst. If you are successful this will be communicated to you in writing by the Chair of Council and announced at a monthly meeting, at which time a certificate will be presented.
If you are asked to wait, a member of the Ethics and Professional Committee will meet you to discuss which areas might need attention before you may decide to apply again.
If you have concerns about the processing of your application, and wish to appeal, we ask you to state this in writing within twenty eight days of receiving the reply from the Ethics and Professional Committee. The Ethics and Professional Committee will then ask two members of AJA and an external assessor to consider your appeal. Their decision will be considered final and communicated to you in writing.
If you were previously a member of another IAAP group and had training analyst status or equivalent of that group and meet all the above criteria, then you may see AJA candidates in training for analysis. Please contact the Ethics and Professional Committee to register your status.
