B9 Retiring from Membership

AJA encourages retiring members to remain affiliated with AJA life as they wish. Retired members bring wisdom and value to AJA and as such, are a vital cornerstone of our legacy and future success.

This summary aims to support members who wish to retire and end their membership of AJA well and consider ways in which they can continue to contribute.

Preparing for Retirement

It is healthy to plan to retire and consider an ending. AJA has had a retirement group for those who are thinking of and considering retirement; it was a place to reflect and share experiences together. Please contact the Ethics and Professional Committee for further information if you maybe interested in connecting with friends and colleagues in this way, as this group can be reinstated. It will work best with individuals who are within 3 years of a planned retirement.

Approximately a year prior to retirement, inform your patients, supervisees, clinical executers, supervisor. Please write to the Ethics and Professional committee (EPC) direct (refer to A2 of the AJA Handbook for current EPC Committee membership) who will offer you the opportunity to meet with a member of the EPC to talk through your decision and ascertain how you wish the information to be disseminated to colleagues.

In line with BPC/UKCP and AJA guidance on preparing for retirement, we ask that in addition to the timely communication to patients and supervisees, you let the Training Committee know, in a timely manner, of any retirement plans you have which may affect your involvement in supervising AJA candidates and/or participating in Review Panels. This will help the Training Committee prepare the candidate for the ensuing change/s and support/protect/safeguard the continuity of the training process.

Please ensure you maintain all the requirements of AJA membership until the date of your retirement including: CPD documentation, registration with the UKCP and/or BCP, IAAP and your insurance details.

At your retirement, all files held in connection with you, including annual CPD documents and 5-yearly reaccreditation documents will be deleted from AJA data files.

Opportunities to remain involved

Become a Trustee

Retired members can contribute, and in some circumstances, can be asked to develop new training initiatives within AJA in collaboration with the training committee.

If appropriate, retired members can remain involved in supervising AJA candidates, taking part in review panels or mentoring candidates by following the process set out in B9 initiated prior to their retirement date.

They can collaborate to support the production of the AJA Festschrift.

They can, in liaison with the training committee or ethics and professional committee, offer to talk to individuals who make informal enquiry to AJA about the JAPQT training or joining AJA. We envisage this is a conversation sharing information about AJA life and friendly guidance and advice about next steps as set out in the AJA Handbook.

Monthly meetings are a crucial part of the AJA community and retired members can be invited to lead sessions on subjects that enhance post Jungian thinking or come and take part for free.

Retired members can further their research and writing interests by inviting AJA members and candidates to participate in projects as they wish.
